Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Project

The Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) System is set to be one of the most important and largest transport infrastructure projects Malaysia has embarked on. This project is listed as an Entry Point Project (EPP) under the Economic Transformation Programme’s Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley National Key Economic Areas (NKEA), and will provide a major boost in the integration and efficiency of urban public transport.

The MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line

The first line of the Klang Valley MRT Project to be implemented is the 51km MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.

The line begins from Sungai Buloh, located to the north-west of Kuala Lumpur, and runs through the city centre of Malaysia’s capital city before ending in Kajang, a fast developing town to the south-east of the city.

The line will run underground for a distance of 9.5km beneath the centre of Kuala Lumpur while the rest of the alignment is elevated. The line will have 31 stations of which seven will be underground.

sbk-alignment

Phase One of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line from Sungai Buloh to Semantan will be operational by the end of 2016. The Phase Two, from Semantan Station to Kajang Station will be operational by July 2017, allowing trains to run the entire alignment.

Each train set serving the line will have four cars, allowing a total capacity of 1,200 passengers. The daily ridership is estimated to be about 400,000 passengers. Trains will run at a frequency of 3.5 minutes.

Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line

The initial phase of the line between Sungai Buloh and Kampung Batu is due to be operational by July 2021 and the remainder of the line from Kampung Batu to Putrajaya Sentral is scheduled to be opened by July 2022. The MRT Line 2 is expected to have a ridership of 529,000 passengers per day. This is expected to further improve the chronic traffic congestion currently in Kuala Lumpur.

The line will serve a corridor with a population of around 2 million people stretching from Sungai Buloh to Putrajaya and will include Sri Damansara, Kepong, Batu, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Tun Razak, KLCC, Tun Razak Exchange, Kuchai Lama, Seri Kembangan and Cyberjaya.

The proposed alignment is 52.2km of which 13.5km is underground. A total of 37 stations, 11 of them underground, will be built. The Government has allocated RM28 billion for the implementation of the MRT Line 2.
