Brief outline of the low carbon town development plan

Greenest City Action Plan
The Greenest City Action Plan is a strategy for staying on the leading edge of urban sustainability.
We are working with Council, residents, businesses, other organizations, and all levels of government to implement this plan.
Our vision
Our vision is to create opportunities today, while building:
• A strong local economy
• Vibrant and inclusive neighbourhoods
• Internationally recognized city that meets the needs of generations to come
Through a set of measurable and attainable targets, we are putting Vancouver on the path to becoming the greenest city in the world.

Our city has what it takes to successfully get 100% of our energy from renewable sources before 2050.
• We already have the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per person of any major North American city.
• We are economically strong and diverse.
• We are a city that innovates and already has abundant clean electricity.
Our goal: to get 100% of our energy from renewable sources before 2050

Targets and actions
We have a long history of supporting climate action, from the Clouds of Change reports in 1990 to the Community Climate Change Action Plan in 2005 and the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan in 2011, and now the Renewable City Strategy and Plan.
Our ambitious and achievable Renewable City Action Plan:
• Targets buildings, ntransportation, and waste and cross-cutting opportunities
• Builds on a number of strategies already in place, such as the Greenest City Action Plan, Transportation 2040, Zero Waste and Healthy City Strategy

Vancouver is becoming the greenest city, inside and out

Achieving the targets in the Greenest City Action Plan will not just be the work of the government.
It will require the cooperation and participation of all of Vancouver’s residents and businesses.
But Council understands that, if they are going to look to residents to lower their energy consumption, and take action toward the Greenest City goals, they must "walk the talk" when it comes to City operations and facilities.
Improving the sustainability of City operations
These four high-priority actions for City operations will help us reach our Greenest City targets:
• Plan and implement a comprehensive corporate waste reduction and diversion program for all City facilities
• Develop a procurement policy and practice that supports the purchase and use of local food in City-run facilities
• Look for opportunities to green community events that the City runs, sponsors, and permits
• Plan and implement a program to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use in City-run buildings and vehicles
These actions will bring us many steps closer to zero carbon, zero waste, and healthy ecosystems.
