ST-2.4 Intermodal Freight Strategies

FedEx is systematically increasing the efficiency of its aircraft, vehicles and facilities, and implementing alternative energy sources as a part of its EarthSmart project. EarthSmart encourages innovation, learning and action that make business more sustainable.

EarthSmart Solutions encourages innovation at FedEx by offering an internal company designation for any of the company’s assets — including our planes, trucks and facilities — that meet strict environmental sustainability criteria. FedEx assets that qualify for the EarthSmart Solutions designation must clearly meet or exceed the sustainability standards that we set — and they must exceed standard practices in the industry.

EarthSmart Outreach encompasses philanthropic and volunteer efforts. It is focused on global challenges where FedEx has the greatest opportunity to help make meaningful and positive changes — in the communities where FedEx employees live and work. Areas of focus include sustainable transportation, trade and conservation and educating the next generation about environmental sustainability.

EarthSmart @ Work informs and involves FedEx team members in the company’s sustainability initiatives through programs, activities and other opportunities. Through EarthSmart programs, FedEx is committed to identifying environmentally sustainable solutions and strategies and adapting them to meet the demands of a changing world.

Progress and Achievements

In 2011, Fedex Aircraft Emissions came within 67% of the company’s goal, set in 2005, to reduce aircraft CO2 emissions 20 percent by 2020. Adding more 777Fs to the fleet helps to move more freight worldwide while reducing aircraft emissions per shipment. Aircraft fuel consumption per pound of shipment was reduced by 47% by replacing 727 aircraft with 757s.

408 hybrid-electric and all-electric vehicles were put in service worldwide. By the end of FY11, the fleet increased by nearly 20 percent. 4,000 new, fuel-efficient Sprinters will be added by the end of 2011. Each vehicle is at least 100% more fuel efficient than the most common vehicle it replaces.

51 FedEx facilities that are ISO 14001-certified were put into service, with more on the way. This international standard specifies a process for controlling and improving an organization’s environmental performance. Five facilities that generate solar energy onsite worldwide were introduced, including the new Cologne, Germany, hub completed in FY11. Additionally, 5,000 “free cooling” hours were acquired, thanks to low humidity and cooler air, during a normal year at the new environmentally sustainable Colorado Springs, Colo., data center. The center has earned the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Deisgn (LEED) certification.
